Vernon Nelson "Pat" Whetzel, Sr., 82, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 28, 2016. He was born on September 16, 1934 to Nelson and Ada Whetzel. Pat served in the US Air Force and retired from IBM. He enjoyed playing guitar, being a band member, and Friday morning coffee with his fellow retired IBMers. He was a "gadget guy" with a love for technology, but his greatest loves were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Vernon Nelson "Pat" Whetzel, Sr., 82, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 28, 2016. He was born on September 16, 1934 to Nelson and Ada Whetzel. Pat served in the US Air Force and retired from IBM. He enjoyed playing guitar, being a band member, and Friday morning coffee with his fellow retired IBMers. He was a "gadget guy" with a love for technology, but his greatest loves were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a family man who was always seen with his beloved wife, Ann, as they were inseparable. He will forever be remembered for his love of life, humor, and giving the warmest hugs.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laura "Ann" Whetzel; children, Renée Whetzel Burton and husband, Steve, of Raleigh, Vernon N. Whetzel, Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Indian Trail, NC, Regina Whetzel Grayson and husband, Jamie, of Augusta, GA, and Steven M. Whetzel of Raleigh; grandchildren, Travis Burton, BJ Burton, Nelson R. Whetzel (Candice), Brittany Moore (Dallas), Tyler Corcoran (Amber), and Kelsey Whetzel; great grandchildren, Zoe Whetzel, Skylar Whetzel, Rilyn Moore, Finley Moore, Gentry Moore, and Winslet Moore; sister, Vada Murphy of Harrisonburg, VA. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart, and numerous extended family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, his siblings, Velma Whetzel Hockman, Boyd Whetzel, and Violet Whetzel.

The family will receive friends starting at noon on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, with a funeral service immediately following at 1pm. Burial will be at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Ave, Raleigh.
